Some of the limitations of MUMPs mentioned earlier may be true, (I haven't
finished reading the manuals yet). I have never seen a pretty MUMPS program.
It's almost like idiomatic icon.
What I don't like is that the data is kept in a container file on the host
OS, and is not very accessible from the outside.
What I think is in it's favor is performance and scalability. One of our
departments has a MUMPS database that is huge; one single 16GB file that
crosses many striped disk drives and response time for searches and data
entry by 300 simultaneous users is not more than one or two seconds. Of
course the horsepower of a VAX6620 helps, but I think Icon might be hard
pressed to implement such an application system and environment.
By the way, I'm not switching to MUMPS as my favorite language. Most of
MY work is ideal in Icon. But if I had to do something massive and
multiuser, I think I might look at something like MUMPS because of its
performance and scalability.
